Our Heritage

From the November 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We seldom fully comprehend
The wondrous meanings that attend
The nature of our heritage
As child of God. Instead, we gauge
Our stature by some ill-conceived
And mundane standards once achieved
By mortals in the past. Our goal
Is limited and dim. Our whole
Concept of life is fraught with fear
Of failure, lest the thin veneer
Of doubtful earthly wisdom fail
To meet demands our hopes entail.

When God, all-wise, omnipotent,
Created man, His whole intent
Was centered on desire to be
Expressed in likeness constantly
Reflecting perfect qualities.
To us He gave, as legatees,
His all to use as needs arise.
The bulwark of His love belies
Our tendency to fear, to stress
Inadequacy for success.
There's nothing lacking when we gauge
Our stature by our heritage.
