GAINING A BALANCE ON THE SIDE OF GOD

From the January 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Who shall have the balance of power in the immediate future and in the years to come? This is a question in the thought of many, as the nations of the world engage in competition for the minds of men and for military, political, and economic supremacy. The outcome of this struggle is destined to affect the lives of all men. But Christian Science shows that what the world needs is a balance on the side of righteousness; not equilibrium of ability to wage war, but a preponderance of good in the thought of mankind. This will establish the power of God in world affairs.

Christ Jesus has told us where true power originates and how it can be evidenced through the individual to support and strengthen the cause of right. When Pilate, representing the military and political might of the Roman Empire, said that he had power to crucify or release Jesus, the Master answered (John 19:11), "Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above."

Although Pilate did give the order which resulted in the crucifixion of the Master, and evil seemed to preponderate, still the victory rested on God's side. The mighty demonstration of the resurrection led to the spread of the enlightening and saving force of Christianity throughout the world. The Master's glorious demonstration of the victory of Truth over error, of Spirit over matter, of Life over death, is an inspiring example of the might of God, working through the individual to establish a balance on the side of good.
