"NONE CAN STAY HIS HAND"

From the June 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the face of what appears to be a threatening situation in the world—evil vaunting itself above good, often in the name of good—it is encouraging to consider a question that Mrs. Eddy asks and then answers from the Bible: "Who is it that demands our obedience? He who, in the language of Scripture, 'doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, What doest Thou?'" (Science and Health, p. 256.) "'Hand,' in Bible usage," Mrs. Eddy explains, "often means spiritual power" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 170).

Loyal Christian Scientists have had many proofs of the supremacy of good, evidenced by spiritual protection and healing. They therefore depend with assurance upon God's hand, or spiritual power. The invincible power of God, good, is to them no theological abstraction; it is a scientific fact, one that may be proved. That is why they willingly place their lives in His hand in every situation, without even desiring to ask, "What doest Thou?" that is, "How will You preserve us from the threats of evil?"

Christian Scientists are learning that their greatest safety is in enlightened obedience to God's demands. Such obedience brings tangible evidence of protection and guidance, so much so that those who are obedient are assured that in any emergency they will be guided, directed, and sustained by God.
