ATTAINING SPIRITUALITY

From the December 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The life and works of Christ Jesus show the advantage of possessing spirituality. His freedom from materialism, from belief in the substance, desirability, and power of matter, gave him the mental purity that bestows dominion over discords and false laws—cruel laws not created by Spirit.

The Master did not attribute spirituality to himself alone but taught his followers the true way to attain it and thus to exercise dominion over the mortal senses. Early in his career he was tempted to utilize his spirituality for the advantage of material beliefs. But he quickly overcame this subtle temptation and made the demonstration of spirituality the object of his intense ministry.

Christian Science interprets the life and teachings of Jesus in ways which are understandable to our age and which will be understandable to ages yet to come. This Science shows that the Master, from the time of his overcoming of the temptations in the wilderness to his final ascension above matter, increased in spirituality until the presence, power, and government of God were fully proved to be real. This meant the disappearance to his thought of the contrary and unreal claims of the physical senses.
