Testimonies of Healing

When I was a young man, many years...

From the July 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was a young man, many years before I knew anything about Christian Science, I was told that I had a very weak right eye. When I closed the left eye, the printed page was just a blur. So, I was fitted with reading glasses—a situation that remained more or less the same for quite a long time, except for my changing glasses every five or ten years. About five years ago, however, I started seeing dark spots in front of my right eye.

At this point I decided that I had better do something about the problem. (By now I was a Christian Scientist.) I went to a local Christian Science Reading Room and found several timely articles in bound volumes of the Christian Science periodicals. Among other things, these articles brought out the need to challenge the belief of sight deterioration due to age with the logical assertion that as individuals progress spiritually their vision naturally becomes more acute, not less so.

I discovered that true sight is an aspect of wisdom, providing one with the ability to discern spiritual substance, not matter, as Life. The physical senses, I realized, are incapable of seeing genuine affection, intelligence, innocence, or life. Perception of such qualities comes only through spiritual sense.
