The true strength and capacity of our lives

From the September 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It wasn't exactly the setting I would have expected, but there we were: three travelers waiting for different flights, engaged in a discussion about spiritual things.

One traveler had considerable education in theology, philosophy, and business administration. Yet he admitted that the strongest single idea of his religious faith came from a song he learned as a youngster. "Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so."

He repeated the words just like that, and then he said, "Jesus loves me, and yet the point that often seems to leave the most lasting impression is the phrase in the song that says, we "are weak, but he is strong." I don't think this traveler's feelings were unusual. The contrast between the magnificence of God and the example of Jesus Christ on the one hand, and our human flaws and fallibilities on the other, stands out like a mountain in the middle of everything else we may think or believe about God and the world.
