Testimonies of Healing

Recently on a Wednesday...

From the May 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Recently on a Wednesday evening at our branch church service we heard readings about the transforming nature of the teachings of Christian Science. As a result I was reminded of a healing for which I want to give thanks here, as it initiated transformation of thought in our family.

When I was a small child, a good friend gave my mother a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Mother was suffering from a goiter at that time. She began reading the textbook, called a Christian Science practitioner, attended the nearest Christian Science Church, and then became a member. She was healed. The interesting thing was that her thought was so transformed —so spiritualized through her study of the textbook—that she was not even conscious of the disappearance of the goiter (which had been very obvious) until a friend called her attention to the fact it was gone. Here was a demonstration of the statement in Science and Health "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, —neither in nor of matter,— and the body will then utter no complaints" (p. 14). Since the textbook was given to our family, it has brought demonstrations of Truth over error to four generations.

Several years ago, when my young grandson was interested in toys that transformed from one kind of object to another, I started to think about the fact that the shift from a material to a spiritual basis of being brings true concepts of man to thought and leads one from matter to Spirit. More and more I appreciate what Mrs. Eddy has given us in the textbook. A leading statement to enlighten the reader about the content and purpose of the book is this, from the Preface: "To develop the full might of this Science, the discords of corporeal sense must yield to the harmony of spiritual sense, even as the science of music corrects false tones and gives sweet concord to sound" (p. viii). Such a transformation of thought brings healing to human life.
