The flame of his words

From the April 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Master's words set hearts on fire
and blessed with their rebuke.
Out of a life ablaze with Christ
their startling message shook.

To one who would follow him but first
must bury his father, he said,
"Let the dead bury their dead:
...go...preach the kingdom of God."
Luke 9:60

The searing flame of words like these
annihilates the dross:
their purifying yields the gold
of grief that's turned to grace.

Now Jesus' words spark yours and mine:
our burning hearts are blessed;
lives are ignited, death is consumed
in the furnace of the Christ.
