Articles

In January, we began a series in appreciation of the Journal's contribution to the twentieth century. This month we reprint an article and testimony from the decade 1961-1970. On April 8, 1966, the cover of TIME magazine contained these starling words: "God is dead." The 60s were certainly a time of questioning and turmoil. The article we've selected from the period speaks specifically about the turmoil and mental currents of the decade, the "central deception of human existence" underlying the world's troubles, and the healing perspective that Christian Science brings. The testimony that follows shows how one woman rose above illness and racial discrimination.

The crisis of faith

From the August 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Millions Of People have lost faith in what they used to believe in. This has brought a great moral crisis in our society. We need to understand this crisis, for such understanding throws new light on the wonderful mission and opportunity of Christian Science.

In this century, science and technology have become virtually a system of mass faith. People have pinned their hopes on physics for the explanation of matter, on biology for the explanation of life, on medicine for health, on psychology and psychiatry for the explanation of man and mind, on technological invention for general well-being and happiness.

But now this faith is turning increasingly into dismay. Physics has produced the hydrogen bomb. Chemistry has spawned napalm and DDT. Biology threatens to upset the very processes of life and generation. Technology is polluting our environment and upsetting the balance of nature. Psychiatric research has exposed the dark and fearful depths of the human mind but produced no convincing solutions.
