DAPHNE LUNGE ON MOTIVE

From the May 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Art isn't just built. It builds.

Of course I'm partial to this concept of the creative process as a sculptor, because all my work is about building. But I think that in its deepest, purest sense, all art is about building. And that's where motive comes in.

As I've prayed about my work, one of the ideas that's been most helpful to me is a passage from Science and Health where Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "... the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity."Science and Health, p. 241. I've taken this to mean that if my motive is pure—if I'm creating art to glorify God, to teach, to share, to bring freedom, to heal—then I know I have a firm foundation. Purity, then, is about capturing the realness of an idea—its spiritual essence, its divinity—and staying true to that realness. Making sure I'm bringing out what God sees. Because that's what people really connect with.
