Nineteen years ago I suffered from bronchial asthma, an internal displacement for which I wore a support, constipation, and general debility and nervousness. At that time there was one student of Christian Science in Rocky Mount who, hearing of my need, sent me some copies of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. The transformation in my thinking began when I read an article in the Journal, for by it I saw for the first time that evil is unreal.
As I studied the literature which this kind friend supplied me, I saw that this was what Christ Jesus had taught, and that it enabled one to do the works that he did, according to the degree of one's understanding. My first healing was of constipation. The displacement then disappeared, and chills and fevers went also. I was healed of deafness, of influenza in a very bad form, of asthma, and of suicidal melancholy. All the inharmonies were overcome through the study of Christian Science. Many faults of disposition, such as temper, sensitiveness, and jealousy, have also been overcome. Every sickness that has come to me for eighteen years has been healed by knowing the truth as taught in Christian Science. To say I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy, and to all who have helped me, indeed inadequately expresses my joy and gratitude.
Mrs. Eddy has established for us The Mother Church, the branch churches, the Metaphysical College, The Christian Science Board of Directors, the Board of Lectureship, the Publishing Society, and the Church Manual. I am grateful for all of these agencies, which are blessing the world. Class instruction has been a great blessing to me. In class I learned what Jesus meant when he said to Peter, "Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." How true to the definition of "Church" (see Science and Health, p. 583) is the work that the Christian Science church is doing!
