REBELLING AT BOUNDARIES

From the October 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is evident to the world that many boundaries of the human mind are breaking down. The limits imposed by matter are disappearing before the application of intelligence to the uses of the so-called forces which constitute matter. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Christian Healing" (p. 11), "We are in the midst of a revolution; physics are yielding slowly to metaphysics; mortal mind rebels at its own boundaries; weary of matter, it would catch the meaning of Spirit."

Through Christian Science we find that our experiences are mental, the externalization of our thoughts. In other words, we think our limitations and then experience what we think. Through Science we also find that matter is only a limited way of thinking, a misconception of what God creates. Inevitably, all the physical boundaries set up by mortal thinking will break down as human beliefs yield to the unlimited concepts which are forever known to spiritual sense. The meaning of Spirit— its harmony, omnipresence, omnipotence, omniscience—is finding its way into the thinking of receptive mentalities as men instinctively rebel against the boundaries of matter and explore new fields of thought which Science reveals. Matter's nature as mesmeric illusion is being recognized, and many are refusing to be deluded by its claims.

The spirituality of Christ Jesus, that is, his knowledge of God as Spirit, freed him from the limitations of matter and its laws. He thought in terms of the vastness of Spirit, the depth of Love, the infinitude of Truth, the impersonal perfection of man. Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 30): "The great Way-shower illustrated Life unconfined, uncontaminated, untrammelled, by matter. He proved the superiority of Mind over the flesh, opened the door to the captive, and enabled man to demonstrate the law of Life, which St. Paul declares 'hath made me free from the law of sin and death.'"

Jesus looked to Spirit for cause, substance, and law, and the true concepts he found there gave him mastery over sin, sickness, space, lack, and death. He saw that no identity is limited to a spot in space, but exists everywhere as an idea of omnipresent Mind. He saw that no true activity is limited to a moment in time, but exists eternally as immortal Mind's manifestation. He saw that good is not limited to a human being's expression of it, but is infinite in scope and availability. The Master did not need or utilize material knowledge to break down physical boundaries, but exercised his understanding of God's kingdom and all that it contains.

Christian Science explains how one may demonstrate man's heritage of spiritual understanding and ability, and those who seek to expand their sense of life through Science are finding joy, obedience, health, activity, and adequate supply to be natural rather than strained experiences. Freedom to think in accord with revealed Truth cannot be withheld from anyone. The captive of matter and flesh can begin right where he finds himself to entertain the untrammeled concepts which dispossess matter and evil of their claims to limit one. He can successfully rebel against the boundaries built up by mortal belief. He can know himself as God's incorporeal, omnipresent idea, never bound by flesh, never limited by evil. He can explore new avenues of thought concerning his real self.

Most of the earth's surface has been explored. The possibilities of the atom are being investigated more widely than ever before. But little is yet known of the vast field of Spirit. Exploration of this realm awaits everyone who loves God. Investigation of the power of good has scarcely begun. Knowledge of the ceaseless operation of divine law and the application of it to human problems offer thrilling and satisfying adventure to everyone. The power of Truth is limitless in its influence on the whole race, and each of us can quietly and by his own spiritual knowing contribute toward bringing this power to bear helpfully upon world problems.

One might believe himself to be hopelessly confined by matter or personalities or circumstances. But the inward recognition of Spirit and its creation, which Christian Science brings to view, tramples down limited thought and its binding effect. For instance, the knowledge that the body cannot function at all without thought opens the way to the correcting of congestion, malformation, inaction, and overaction with the thought which understands man's perfection in Mind. The knowledge that material space is a concept of the false physical senses and that man exists in omnipresent Spirit causes the limits imposed by space to disappear; one finds himself moving about freely when his purpose is good.

That supply is man's infinite reflection of divine ideas and qualities eliminates the restrictions of poverty when one begins to express God in his inmost nature. The limits imposed by fatigue are erased from thought when one realizes that man embodies the boundless energies of divinity.

One could go on and on considering the expansion of experience which comes with the exploration of the field of Spirit, where real consciousness abides. Mrs. Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 159,) "The infinite will not be buried in the finite; the true thought escapes from the inward to the outward, and this is the only right activity, that whereby we reach our higher nature."

Christ Jesus knew the field of Spirit, and he explored the possibilities of divine power for the benefit of all mankind, not only for his own release from material boundaries. He said (Luke 12:32), "It is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." Only by closely following the master Christian in his life of goodness and obedience to divine law can mankind explore the kingdom that knows no boundaries and let his thought range fearlessly in the realm of divine Life.

Matter can never remove the limits of matter, for physics never steps out of the realm of the physical and temporal. Yielding to metaphysics, one gradually becomes conscious of his real life in Spirit, where limits are unknown. Through Christian Science many are catching the meaning of Spirit and are advancing beyond matter into the eternal kingdom, where spiritual sense exists forever at home.
