Your Q&A

Your Q&A

From the August 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Following the example set by the question-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers—such as the one below. It will generally not cover questions about how to interpret statements in Mrs. Eddy's writings. There's more information at the end of the column about how to submit questions.

Reports of abuse and torture of Iraqi prisoners might make one wonder if God is in fact in control in Iraq. How can I pray effectively about such a situation?

What a person sees can very easily hide a greater, unseen truth—that God, or good, is the only power, and that good therefore cancels evil out. Really, this idea is grounded in the Bible: "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good" (Rom. 12:21). It's especially at times like this that it's important, vital even, to recognize that God alone is in control, and not evil, no matter what seems to be the case.
