Think back on one of your very worst moments ever. No doubt, that’s a strange way to start an article, but there’s a constructive point to it. Don’t dwell on this moment too much—just long enough to recall it. In the days after that tough time, you might have cursed God. Or, worse, you may have felt an unspeakable, life-crushing sadness and disappointment that you thought might never end. Could it have been that, even then, God surrounded you and loved you? Did you even suspect that, despite it all, the gentle glow and power of God as Love still enveloped you, just as it continues to do so today?
“When I am awake, I am still with thee” (Ps. 139:18). Who hasn’t had moments of being asleep to God’s presence and love? Yet, the instant we wake up, figuratively, we may recognize that the horror and sadness are miniscule, relative to the inextinguishable light of Love. “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him,” says the Bible (I John 4:16). Although written many years ago, these words are vibrant with encouragement and meaning for people. God, divine Love, literally is the overriding and all-encompassing creative force in the universe. You and I are its outcome, its creation, and that makes us its spiritually perfect expressions.
You know, the challenging events in this theatrical dream called mortal living aren’t the entire story of your life. You, and everyone you know, have been abiding here in God, in divine Love, every single moment. In that same chapter of Psalms it says, “If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there” (139:8).
