Happy endings

From The Christian Science Journal - October 1, 2012

“And they lived happily ever after.” We love happy endings in books and movies. And who doesn’t long to experience them in their own lives? We need them a lot, in little things as well as big things, don’t we?

The other day, for example, I heard the story of a family I know and was touched by it. Their situation seemed to be very complex, and I began to think there might be a tragic ending. As I went to sleep, I still carried that thought with me. At some point during the night I briefly woke up and a very clear thought came to me: “But the Christ cares for them!” Reassured and grateful, I was immediately able to fall into a dreamless sleep again.

Why did this thought calm me down like that? Because we can always rely on the peaceful, healing influence of the Christ to bring healing to any troubling situation. Because the Christ is the divine message to humanity speaking to us of God-given good as Mary Baker Eddy explains in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (see p. 332). And because the truth of this message is irrefutable. I didn’t know how this specific situation was going to resolve itself, but from that moment on I was able to think of that family with much peace and joyous trust.
