‘Like it’

From The Christian Science Journal - September 25, 2013

Originally written in German, this article first appeared on JSH-Online.com for the German, French, Portuguese, and Spanish editions of The Herald of Christian Science.

Nowadays it’s a nice gesture to highlight a comment, a photo, etc., on the Internet by clicking on “Like.” As I held a new issue of The Herald of Christian Science in my hands sometime ago, I spontaneously thought, “Like it!” What do I like? I like something that I agree with, that pleases me, inspires me, gives me food for thought, and nudges me to question habitual thought patterns. It also gives me new insights that I can learn from, and that means a lot to me.

Other readers may have other reasons to respond with “Like” on the Web. As for me, I feel it’s a nice gesture to the authors. It shows that I agree with them, emphasizing to others what the author of the article shared. When more people make known their appreciation of an article, it can make it easier for other readers to recognize the valuable ideas shared, accept them for themselves, and be blessed by them. By “Liking” an article, I also show my joy and gratitude—qualities that benefit all.

The Bible tells us, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). In today’s language, we might say God clicked on “Like” concerning His creation; in fact, He loved it very much. Why does God love His creation, including man (both men and women)? Because man is as good as God is. In the Bible, Jeremiah expresses it in words that make God’s relationship with man very clear: “I have loved thee with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). And Jesus’ whole career shines a light on the joy and love God has for man. Every healing Jesus accomplished is actually a public affirmation of the fact that God says, “I love you” and that God’s creation is “very good.” The light of the Christ manifested by Jesus leads us all to the understanding that God is Love and that His creation is the expression of Love. We, too, can acknowledge the true status of our fellow men and women as the creation of God, always loved.
