Listening to God in silence

From The Christian Science Journal - June 12, 2014

Have you ever tried being still and just listening to God in silence? That’s not always easy—it can take effort. It usually means we first need to quiet all the rushing thoughts that would make us harp on the past or worry about the future. Quieting those rushing thoughts and just listening to God in silence is not the norm for many of us, especially in today’s fast-paced society.

But if you or I should observe patterns of thinking in ourselves that are negative, fretful, or fearful, and if we don’t like this kind of thinking, then perhaps we may want to try simply listening to God in silence.

This listening is the activity of prayer. It’s the work of making space in thought to hear uplifting and inspired spiritual messages from God, which reveal the innate, spiritual reality of our being. In shutting out fear and anxiety, and seeking contemplative silence, we learn that this quiet space in thought is filled with the presence of God.
