In coming into the harbor of New York, many years...

From the March 1911 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In coming into the harbor of New York, many years ago, I was much impressed with the statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World," a colossal figure which towers above the water, and light in hand illumines the way. So imposing and majestic was this statue that I wondered why a woman had been selected as the type of liberty, despite the fact that women are more or less oppressed in all nations, having to struggle for their liberty even in the most civilized countries. How little did I then dream that 1 should find in this "land of liberty" the truth by which every one may win his freedom from sin, disease, sorrow, poverty, and all that would hold him in bondage, which would hinder his progress, the truth which brings complete emancipation in that it teaches the limitless possibilities of man as the idea of God.

Now I can see an expression of true wisdom and foresight in the selection of a womanly figure as the type for the statue of Liberty, for the true sense of freedom has come to this generation through a woman, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I give heartfelt thanks for my freedom and my healing, also for the spiritual uplifting,' and I rejoice that today the nations can look up to the woman who stands with the light of Truth and Love in her hand, illumining the way into a haven of rest and peace, where all may realize "the glorious liberty of the children of God."
