RIGHTEOUS THINKING

From the October 1919 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To such proportions has the demonstration of Christian Science advanced that every day is replete with healing experiences. When one reads in the periodicals and hears in the Wednesday evening meetings the testimonies of healing, and sees and learns of the liberty and unspeakable joy that come to sick, sinful, discordant, and despondent mortals through the study and application of this teaching, he has conclusive proof of the power of divine Mind as expressed in righteous thinking, and of the fact that God heals. All this evidence should be taken as an earnest of the transformation, reformation, and regeneration that will come to the world when mankind apprehends and practices this absolute truth.

In Proverbs it is said of a man that "as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Thought precedes action; thought produces action. It is thought that molds life, men, governments, nations, the world. Thought is the power behind all industrial developments. Mankind is constantly thinking. Men's thoughts are manifested upon their bodies and in their acts and lives. Through the expressed thoughts of men and by their acts and lives we gain an understanding of them. The early expressed thoughts of Mrs. Eddy reveal that deeply rooted spirituality which led to her profound study of the Scriptures and later gave to the world "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which unlocked and revealed a spiritual knowledge and a spiritual understanding of the Bible that has enabled her followers to heal the sick and the sinning. We cannot be reminded too often of the importance of righteous thinking and the importance of doing our own thinking. If we continually accept and act upon the expressed thoughts of others, if we allow others to solve the problems which we are in duty obligated to solve ourselves, we shall make little progress in demonstration, until we learn to think righteously,—to be governed by divine Mind.

A reliance upon God and an understanding of Him as Principle leads to righteous thinking, for righteous thinking is the product of Love. Spiritual thinking is righteous thinking, which enables us to solve correctly our own problems, to rise above human mentality and the so-called power of suggestion, hypnotism, animal magnetism, and all unrighteous thinking. It keeps thought pure and loving toward all mankind. Divine Mind acting in human experience through right thinking eliminates greed, anger, malice, hate, revenge, all that is unlike God, and leads to obedience, humility, gentleness; it brings an understanding of the law of Love, and consequently reflects love; it banishes wrong concepts of God and reveals Him as omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, as an ever present help in trouble.
