GRATITUDE

From the June 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE student of Christian Science never scientifically works out a problem without his thought reaching out with increased gratitude to its revelator, Mary Baker Eddy. Each problem that we solve in Christian Science brings to us a clearer understanding of the unfailing law governing the universe and the fixed divine Principle by which this law is maintained. Each additional proof of God's perfect government, received through the application of this truth, brings a firmer conviction to the student that Christian Science cannot fail, because God is good, Truth is true, and Principle and its rule are constant in their operation—the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. How could a Christian Scientist, therefore, refrain from expressing gratitude to her who through her love for God and humanity, through her receptivity, her spirituality, her fidelity, and her obedience, was able to prove man's unity with Spirit and thus take her rightful place as God's witness, as God's messenger, bringing to mankind the joyful news that men can work out their salvation here and now?

We can never fail to be grateful to Mrs. Eddy, who has revealed the light of Truth and Love, which illumines the universe and lights the way Christ Jesus took out of the pain, sorrow, and sin of materiality into the peace and joy and goodness of spiritual being. She has explained to us the one and only way, the Christ-way, of salvation, whereby we can win the crown of rejoicing. There is only one way in which we can express our gratitude to God for His eternal goodness, to Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and to Mary Baker Eddy, our Leader; and that is by obedience to the spiritual behests contained in the Bible and our Leader's writings. And Mrs. Eddy has stated in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 3): "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech."

Daily we have opportunities to express, through right action, our gratitude for Christian Science. We do not have to wait until we are holders of offices in our branch churches or are registered as Christian Science practitioners before we can bring solace and comfort to those who need them. Each moment brings with it the opportunity to claim more of the love of God that is ours by reflection; more of the wisdom and intelligence that are ours because of our relationship to the one Mind; more of the spiritual sense that intuitively leads us to do the right thing at the right time, since God is now our Soul. We can express more of unimpeded right action or true activity now. because God is our eternal Life, which never changes; and since God is Truth, we can rest assured that He is maintaining perfect order by His changeless law.
