THE LAW OF LIBERTY

From the November 1936 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The longing for liberty inherent in the hearts of men is the natural revolt against oppression, since man's real state is one of freedom. This longing is the expression of mankind's insistent urge toward a knowledge of real, spiritual existence. This understanding alone confers true freedom, and the desire for its attainment is so divinely natural that its satisfaction is assured. When Christ Jesus declared, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," he presented the divine rule which, fully understood and utilized, ends human bondage.

Christian Science is restoring in this age a knowledge of the law of Truth which the great Way-shower declared would make free. By revealing God as divine Principle, the supreme and only Lawmaker, it is making this liberating spiritual law available to all mankind. Discernment of spiritual law as the only governing power reveals a universe and man completely expressing divine law and order. Thus understood it becomes apparent that autocratic control and enslavement of any nature are not the normal conditions of man; nor do they in reality exist.

That ignorance of what constitutes true freedom continues in belief to enslave mankind is evident when it is recalled that only a few years ago a great and terrible war was fought for the avowed purpose of securing safety and freedom for the world. Yet, today, what do we see? A voluntary surrender on the part of various nations of the measure of freedom gained at so great a sacrifice. Could such an inconsistency exist if these peoples had attained of sufficiently clear concept of genuine freedom to enable them to retain that which had been so dearly won?
