IDENTITY AND EMPLOYMENT

From the April 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Satisfactory and profitable employment, broadly viewed, is something desired and sought at some time by almost every human being. When employment is considered merely as a localized material activity, subject to and controlled by the will of many persons, it becomes an illusive something, here today, gone tomorrow; something subject to chance and change; something to be gained and lost through dishonest practices, wealth, social prominence, political pressure. The insecurity of employment placed on a material basis is inevitable, and should ultimately cause mortals to look away from and outside themselves to the all-loving Father-Mother God, the Giver of all good, as the source of supply.

By reason of its finiteness, its ignorance of spiritual reality, the human mind is of itself altogether incapable of providing anything real— above all, a solution to the problems in which it becomes self-entrapped. Should we not then welcome, and even hasten, the coming to our consciousness of the light of the Christ, Truth, the illumination needed to dispel the mental darkness engendered by a false sense of existence as material?

Students of Christian Science are keenly aware of the value of spiritual enlightenment regarding the subject of satisfactory employment, many of them having become earnest students through having witnessed or experienced the overcoming of unemployment, or of unsatisfactory employment, through the application of the teachings of Christian Science. Others, during many years, have had occasion to prove the practical efficacy of this Science in their effort to maintain right and profitable activity in the human economy.
