INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY IN CHURCH DEDICATION

From the October 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is the commendable desire of every Christian Science church organization to dedicate its edifice as soon as possible after its erection. As each member accepts his individual responsibility to work intelligently, and pray fervently, for guidance in the unfoldment of the human footsteps to be taken, there will come into his consciousness a fuller understanding of infinite supply.

The word "dedication" is defined in part as the "act of setting apart or dedicating to a divine being, or to a sacred use; ... a devoting or setting aside for any particular purpose" (Webster). Christian Science churches are consecrated to the service of the one infinite God, and all their activities have as their ultimate purpose the bringing of the gospel, the good news of Christian Science Mind-healing, to all mankind. The words "dedicate" and "consecrate" are closely associated in meaning and are often used synonymously. When one consecrates his life to a great purpose, he devotes his time and energy to the attainment of that purpose. As each member consecrates himself to the commendable purpose of freeing his church from debt, he may well consider some of the qualities of thought which will be helpful to him in reaching the desired goal.

Gratitude is one of the most important attributes which we can express. "Are we really grateful for the good already received?" asks our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on page 3 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Continuing, she writes, "Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more." What are the blessings which we already have? The greatest of these is the revelation of Christian Science. Are we expressing our gratitude for the blessings which Christian Science has brought into our lives? Are you "ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you"? When each one can give an affirmative answer to that question, our Wednesday evening meetings will abound in convincing testimonies.
