LOVE, THE DEMAND OF THE HOUR

From the October 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Unquestionably, within the heart of every Christian upon earth today is the deep longing or desire to tell the "old, old story of Jesus and his love;" but in order to do so understandingly, one must know and comprehend more fully the Christly way of loving which Jesus so perfectly exemplified. Christian Science is unfolding to receptive hearts a higher understanding of love, for it explains to its students the all-encompassing, liberating love of God, and points to Christ as the perfect expression or reflection of divine Love. Further, it encourages its students to keep uppermost in their thinking the spirit of Christian Science by striving daily to emulate the divine pattern of the Christ in their individual lives.

What are the divine requirements of the Christ-way of loving? In his letter to the Ephesians Paul writes: "That ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God." This Scriptural gem definitely points out the dimensions of Spirit. And in the life of Christ Jesus, we find one who accepted these dimensions and attained the true consciousness.

In the thirteenth chapter of his first epistle to the Corinthians, Paul gives us a picture of the master Christian's love. This chapter is one of the greatest sources of inspiration to all Christians, for by it each of us can measure his attainment of the true idea of love.
