Poems

BY THE BROOK CHERITH

From the June 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Elijah, man of God,
By ravens fed!

Surprising that his need was met
By Cherith's brook, serenely clear?
Ah, no! It was but recompense
For trust that overcometh fear.
He walked by faith, God's high behest.
Exalted thought, swift messenger
Of prayer upwinging, thus did reach
Through Spirit's sword a holy quest.

Elijah, man of God,
By wisdom led!

Surprising that each step was proved
To Zidon, e'en to Zarephath?
Ah, no! Faith knows no boundary,
Never stopping-place Mind hath.
Wide the need, deeper Love doth go,
Evermore to man revealing
God's will as law. Accepting this,
Obedient hearts no crossroads know.
