THE CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST AND WORLD AFFAIRS

From the October 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Striking the keynote for all world citizens, Mary Baker Eddy says in the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. vii), "The time for thinkers has come." When confronted with knotty world problems, men have to think wisely in order to solve them. From the radio, newspapers, and news reels we often get a confused and confusing picture of the social, political, and economic unrest, the aftermath of the war. As Christian Scientists we should earnestly and prayerfully seek the answer to this question: "How may we best serve the interests of our country and of all mankind in the establishment of permanent peace?"

What is the Christian Scientist to think when confronted on all sides by such conditions as distrust, lack, greed, and so forth? He is taught in Christian Science never to accept the testimony of the physical senses; but he cannot shut his eyes to humanity's needs and pass by "on the other side," like the priest and the Levite (Luke 10:31, 32). Moreover, he can definitely aid, by his constructive thinking, in the solution of the problems facing labor, management, and government. He has the ability and responsibility to do so.

Jesus left to all his followers the command to watch, and when one watches carefully the trend of his thinking, he does not allow himself to entertain erroneous, destructive thoughts instead of constructive and healing ideas. It is important for this reason to consider what concept of man is being held in thought. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (pp. 476, 477) that "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals."
