IS THERE BALM IN GILEAD?

From the December 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Everyone recognizes the importance of looking in the direction in which he is going, whether traveling on the highway, selecting the college to further his education, or searching for health. There is great need today for physical, moral, and spiritual health in the business world, in politics, and in the relationship of all peoples of the earth. To attain a desired goal one must look in the right direction and perseveringly walk that way..

The student of Christian Science certainly understands that one cannot look to matter, or to those who claim to have obtained their knowledge from matter, and expect to find therein a solution to the individual's problem or the world's problems, for the answer is not there. Mankind is awakening to see that matter and material knowledge have utterly failed to cure mankind of its ills. Surely there is a remedy. Where can it be found? Many years ago Mary Baker Eddy answered the question. That answer is found on page 264 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The remarkable statement reads: "Mortals must look beyond fading, finite forms, if they would gain the true sense of things. Where shall the gaze rest but in the unsearchable realm of Mind?"

As we come to the Christianly scientific understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him, we gain confidence in His loving purpose to create, govern, and maintain in perfect harmony all that He has created. This spiritual fact nullifies the negative, fearful suggestions of the carnal mind. It enables us to see that in Mind alone is the remedy for the woes of mankind. Then no longer are we tempted to look futilely to any other source for help.
