The Jewels

From the March 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Here are the treasured jewels of Spirit's giving:
See how this bright one sparkles in the light.
Does not its splendor woo you from your sadness
As would a child dancing in delight?
Strangely enough, men sometimes fail to see it
Until, when great adversities destroy
Their fondest dreams, they look from earth to heaven
And find this holy prize. Its name is joy.

Here is another gem, a priceless wonder,
A treasure in itself; behold its glow.
There is somehow a quality about it
That gives a strength no ill can overthrow.
A precious thing indeed, you say, and truly;
Yet often it is picked from out the dust.
When human hopes beneath men's feet have crumbled,
They pray to God, and there is shining trust.

Here is one perhaps you had not noticed,
Shaped like a heart, most marvelously wrought.
The master jeweler's name is there, engraven
In tribute to the holy skill he taught.
Well might a man give all he has of riches
For that fair gem. And yet one may possess
It freely just by living to bless others
With what God gives. Men call it Christliness.
