SPIRITUAL LAWS VERSUS MATERIAL LIES

From the December 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Nothing ever "just happens." What appears as genuine good in human experience is the manifestation of the law of God in operation, the law of divine Principle, which is Love. Nothing but good can ever come from God, Love, with whom, James tells us, "is no variableness, neither shadow of turning" (1:17). What appears as bad to us is the result of our ignorant or voluntary rejection of the law of God, good, and our belief in the reality of evil.

The aggregate beliefs and opinions held for centuries by mortals have become so-called laws to mankind. Those who, consciously or unconsciously, ignorantly or tacitly, accept such beliefs as fact may find themselves influenced, governed, or limited by such misnamed laws. Christian Science exposes mortal mind laws as lies by destroying the effects of these false laws through the utilization of true law, the divine law of God.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 229): "By universal consent, mortal belief has constituted itself a law to bind mortals to sickness, sin, and death. This customary belief is misnamed material law, and the individual who upholds it is mistaken in theory and in practice. The so-called law of mortal mind, conjectural and speculative, is made void by the law of immortal Mind, and false law should be trampled under foot."
