"THE ENNOBLING STRIFE"

From the June 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The pioneer paths which men have trod in a search for the betterment of the human race have not been strewn with flowers, nor were they paths of self-ease and self-indulgence. History furnishes shining examples of those who, because of their deep humility and nobility of character, were willing to lay aside all sense of self, to do battle with the myriad forms of evil, and thus to contribute to the progress of humanity.

Unparalleled is the example of Christ Jesus, who was divinely anointed. He is the Way-shower to all who endeavor to lay aside the material sense of existence for spiritual reality. Mary Baker Eddy, whom the world is recognizing as one of the greatest religious leaders of all time, was a consecrated follower of the Master.

From a child, it was Mrs. Eddy's custom to turn to God for comfort and guidance. Patient years of forced renunciation of all that seems desirable in human experience and her natural dependence upon her heavenly Father had prepared her thought for the revelation of Christ, Truth. This revelation she has given to the world in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and in her other writings. She states in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 249): "Millions may know that I am the Founder of Christian Science. I alone know what that means."
