A CHANGE OF BASE

From the October 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An important element in the redemptive and healing work of Christian Science is shown in the following passage found in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It reads (p. 162,) "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind."

As this passage indicates, what is needed to effect a healing in Christian Science is a change of base, a change in human consciousness. How reluctant individuals seem to be at times to accept such a change! Although they will readily change the style of their clothes, their color schemes, or their furnishings, they cling tenaciously to outmoded attitudes and cherished personal beliefs. To change the mind is a more difficult task, because it involves the giving up of pride and egotism.

Paul, the great apostle and teacher, saw the transforming effect of a change in thought. In his letter to the Romans he wrote (12:2,) "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." This renewal of thought means a change of base, a fresh standpoint involving spiritual concepts with which to replace those accepted before.
