THE READERS AND THE MOTHER CHURCH MANUAL

From the August 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Readers in The Mother Church and in all branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, are church officers. They hold important positions—occupy responsible offices. They are morally obligated to understand their branch church bylaws, as well as the Rules and By-Laws in the Church Manual by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and to obey and support them.

A proper perspective of the Church Manual is necessary in order readily to fulfill the duties of the office of Reader. One should know that our Leader was divinely inspired and impelled to write the Manual and to indite therein what God revealed to her. One should know that the Rules and By-Laws are God's loving provision for what is most needed right now. And he should be assured that they are the complete, final, and permanent instruction to govern and safely guide Readers and all other officers and members of The Mother Church for all time to come.

As one correctly evaluates the meaning, intent, and scope of the Rules and By-Laws in the Manual, thought opens to apprehend basic, demonstrable spiritual facts concerning the government of The Mother Church. This spiritual enlightenment will enable Readers to esteem the Manual as their advisory counsel. Daily prayerful consultation with its Rules and By-Laws will assure their participation in the manifold blessings which accrue from obedience thereto.
