THE LANGUAGE OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the October 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN 1866 Mrs. Eddy discovered that the healing power of Christ, the Truth which Jesus taught and practiced, is as available today as it was in the early days of Christianity. Then she undertook the task of sharing her discovery with others. First it had to be submitted to the pragmatic test of healing the sick and transforming the sinner. Then its language had to be such that it would adequately convey the discovery to others. Familiar words had to convey new meanings. Religious terms had to be uplifted and spiritualized. Scientific terms had to be introduced. Step by step under divine direction a language evolved that suited the need.

The language of Christian Science makes available to the present century spiritual facts that were revealed through the Old and New Testaments. Because this language is scientific, it will continue to serve the cause of Christianity with increasing effectiveness until the mission of Christianity is fulfilled. The language of Science is steadily being given a place in the vocabulary of the world's thinkers and is finding favor with those who are touched by its ministrations.

Christian Science is consistent with its premise—the allness of God, Spirit—and never deviates from it. This is the more remarkable when it is realized that the language of this Science is called upon to serve a dual purpose: it must convey the absolute truths of divine Science and at the same time reduce these truths to human perception. A word or term that conveys an absolute truth in one instance must present an application of this truth in the next instance. This is the only way that humanity can be lifted out of its materialism, part with its errors, and yield to that which is divine. Through proper capitalization and correct terminology the language of Christian Science conveys to the receptive thought a correct interpretation of Christianity as Jesus presented it.
