"LIFT UP YOUR EYES"

From the April 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ISAIAH, referring to God's incomparable works, exhorted men as follows (40: 26): "Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth." Lifting our eyes, our thoughts, requires us to look away from material appearances. It requires us to understand that because they are God's creation, man and the universe are spiritual and eternal.

In Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy we read (p. 96): "This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace." Science and peace indicate the operation of Christ, Truth, in human consciousness, while discord and dismay point to the senseless acceptance of error as real. The replacing of false concepts with the divine ideas of God awakens us to the truth of man as the perfect, incorporeal image and likeness of God, Spirit.

Our thoughts must be progressively lifted to a higher understanding of creation; to a higher level than the false beliefs of material existence and environment present to our deluded senses. This is accomplished in the degree that we gain an understanding of God and His infinite creation, in which all God's ideas are governed harmoniously by His unchanging law of Love.
