THE SPRINGTIDE OF SPIRIT

From the April 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science leads men to step out mentally into a new awareness of God and His spiritual universe. The master Metaphysician, Christ Jesus, revolted against dogma and the teaching that prayer is a formulated rite or a special privilege ordained to only a few. Jesus stepped out from a confining sense of material worship. The Pharisees and scribes, who worshiped God materially, were rebuked by the Master, for he said, "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in" (Matt. 23:13). The Master revealed God as good, ever present, all-power, and available to all.

Since the days of Jesus, history indicates that men have sought the understanding of his teaching but with only partial success; but now through Christian Science they are discovering the spiritual significance of his words and works. The practical value of this spiritual significance brings healing, happiness, and safety to all who seek harmony in a better understanding of the Christ.

Today the faithful study and application of Christian Science are reminding mankind of Christ Jesus' prophecy recorded in John's Gospel, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father" (John 14:12). It was also in this last discourse to his followers before the crucifixion that the Master promised a fuller explanation of all he had been teaching them. He said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."
