OVERCOMING MATERIALISM

From the November 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The real man is revealed in Christian Science to be the image of infinite Mind. Being infinite, he is immeasurable. He is spiritual. We can identify ourselves as the image of Mind only in terms of measureless being. Spirit, a synonym for Mind, for God, fills all space; but the space occupied by Spirit is spiritual, divinely mental, and the substance of that space is Spirit itself. Man, the image of Spirit, is likewise indefinable in material terms. The real man is not to be found in material space, since Spirit is All, and there is no matter. And since time is one of matter's dimensions, man's existence is without respect to time, without reference to time, occupying no time. He exists in the only, with the great I am, Mind.

Jesus illustrated in human terms the spaceless, timeless image of Mind that man really is. He showed the effects on the human body and on human experience of consistently denying material error and of identifying oneself as an idea of infinite Spirit. Today we can demonstrate by degrees the power of Spirit as Jesus did, healing the sick and raising the dying through the application of the truths of God and man as taught in Christian Science.

Victories over the belief in material time and space, in emulation of Jesus' conversation with Moses and Elias on the mountaintop and of his transporting a ship and those in it instantly to the other side of the lake, are yet to come, as is the demonstration of spiritual identity in ascension without first passing through what appears to be death. But we must press on toward this end. Jesus said (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
