SYMPTOMS—TRUE AND FALSE

From the March 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

TO humanity, in general, existence seems to be a round of material events; Christian Science, with irrefutable proof, reveals true existence to be spiritual. This Science presents a clear distinction between so called material, or mortal, man and the real man, the manifestation of God. Because Spirit, God, is infinite and perfect and man is His image and likeness, man must necessarily be spiritual and perfect. Mortal man, troubled with sin, sickness, and death, is not the likeness of perfect God; he is only the counterfeit of the real man.

The real man expresses God's qualities, such as beauty, purity, and love. Therefore in proportion as one discerns and reflects these qualities, he expresses his real selfhood. Jesus demonstrated real manhood in healing the sick and bringing comfort and joy to the poor in spirit. In his brief ministry he revealed spiritual existence to be the only true existence, awaiting only individual recognition and demonstration to prove the utter fallacy of the counterfeit.

Christian Science, explaining the words and works of Christ Jesus, shows that a symptom of disease or any inharmony in mortal experience is entirely mythical. The fear of what appears to be sin, sickness, death, or inharmony of any kind may be classed as superstition in its broadest sense, for nothing short of superstition can cause one to fear the symptoms of something which does not really exist. Such unreasoning fear is mesmeric submission to a supposititious power opposed to God, Mind.
