THE SPIRITUALITY OF CHRISTMAS

From the December 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What mother has not been importuned by her little ones who want to know when Christmas is coming? From the very young this query may well occur shortly before Christmas, right after it, or, indeed, at almost any time during the year. We may be tempted to dismiss lightly such inquiries as mere childish remembrance of the human delights of gifts, food, family, friends, and other special enjoyments peculiar to the season. But may there not well be—even with the smallest children—a genuine thirst for the love, inspiration, and joy of the Christ, Truth?

For a number of years one little boy looked forward constantly from Christmas to Christmas, though a substantial part of this time was coincident with the world economic depression, and there was little in the way of human amenities to make the occasion glad. The widespread warmth, friendliness, and happiness associated with this beloved day were what meant so much to him, and he often wondered why this couldn't continue during the rest of the year as well.

Having had thorough training in Christian Science in his homelife and in the Sunday School in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, while still a lad, he began to gain a more enduring sense of Christlike joy and peace. Later, through membership in a Christian Science college organization, church membership, and class instruction, he learned well that the human happiness usually associated with Christmas is only the merest shadow of the rich, inspiring, and abiding unfoldment of Love which is ours every day.
