THE PROTECTIVE POWER OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the February 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IT is widely conceded that Christian Science heals and reforms, but that it protects from harm is less well known. Protection is gained from the conviction that God is the only presence, power, cause, or effect. God is the only lawmaker, the only judge of all that really exists, and man is a spiritual idea responsive to God's thoughts and not limited by a material personality, nor is he a victim of circumstance or of the unexpected behavior of others.

Evil of every name or nature is an unreal belief, not an actuality. Man in Science, God's reflection, has no need of protection, since he exists forever as the perfect image of the perfect Mind, God. When these spiritual truths are understood by the individual student of Christian Science, he comes under the protection of the law of good, which destroys the belief that man is a mortal. The protection of such right thinking is practical, provable, and sure.

The scientific nature of the protection which an understanding of Christian Science affords is indicated in a passage on page 335 of "Miscellaneous Writings." Mrs. Eddy, after referring to zealots who feel that declaring the nothingness of iniquity is covering it up, observes, "Such people say, 'Would you have me get out of a burning house, or stay in it?'" Her reply follows, "I would have you already out, and know that you are out."
