Man's Individual Identity Is Unconfined

From the November 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As devoted students of Christian Science explore the depths of Truth, a clearer and clearer comprehension of man's individual spiritual identity unfolds in their thoughts. No more is it possible for them to agree with the popular assumption that man is finite or in any way related to a material body or a worldly environment. In the measure that the truth of man's unconfined spiritual nature is accepted, material limitations naturally fall away.

Man's individual identity as the spiritual expression or conception of God is completely unrestricted by mortal mind or matter. One's true identity might be compared to a numerical value existent within the science of mathematics. The written symbol for a stated value is restricted to a place, but the value itself is universal. It is unrestricted and unrelated to a locality. It is immediately everywhere.

Christ Jesus repeatedly illustrated his free, unconfined nature. He was unimpeded by the commonly accepted obstacles of a material environment. What he knew of himself as the spiritual Son of God was indicated on various occasions. He appeared beside the wave-tossed boat of his frightened disciples and forthwith stilled the tempest. He went through an angry mob unharmed. After his resurrection he appeared to the weeping Mary at the tomb and comforted her. Twice, closed doors were no impediment to him when his disciples needed proof of his existence. He appeared and walked with two of his sorrowful followers on the road to Emmaus, and disappeared when they recognized him.
