Praying for Peace

From the February 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A newspaper announcement of a David Susskind show, a TV discussion program, read, "Part one: Our sons went to prison instead of Vietnam. Part two: Our sons fought and died in Vietnam." When enough of us learn to pray honestly and consistently, we shall see God's purpose for man fulfilled in our human lives. Then we shall have Part three: We prayed, and there was no more war.

There is no way on earth by which killing can be justified. But mankind's failure to stop war indicates that something is wrong with our approach to the problem. And the something wrong could be that people say they want to stop killing, but insist on defining killing in physical terms only. If there is another kind of murder, and we ignore it or participate in it, what is to be said of our denunciations of war?

The will of God for man is most clearly seen in the life and teachings of Christ Jesus. His evaluation of physical life comes through clearly in these words: "Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Matt. 10:28; And, "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."v. 39; To Christ, Truth, which Jesus exemplified and which Christian Science reveals, the conscious identity of each individual is eternal.
