FOR THE HAVING: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

From the July 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Following that incisive summation
enfold of brother love
of spiritual cause/spiritual effect
windowed release to law
the people saw
that Jesus "taught them as one having authority,
and not as the scribes"—
(the scribes who demanded
but practiced not,
who claimed to be authority
and therefore law to others,
self-lifting to the upper rooms
self-rewarding with the enlarged borders).

Hearts turned, stirred
incandescent with hope that lit the centuries quick with healing
through Jesus' impeccable practice
of having authority.
O veilless equity, emancipating men to mercy

He who loved the having of Love's authority, taught others their having
through prayer:
that difficult, single-eyed task
of yielding
in unlabored reflection
to God's knowable allness.

Striking down the un-healing
the tyranny of scribal pride and push to hold off heaven,
Jesus said, and did: Principle's way: un-selfing mortality,
enlightening, and letting
our everywhere-at-once-
present Father
lift His unsmug children
us, too! us, too!
into unboundaried perception
and harmony for the having.
