Reflection: a liberating vision

[Original in German]

From the December 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What presents itself in nature as an object appears on the retina of our eye as an inverted image. This phenomenon of inversion illustrates the illusory nature of the images of material sense. The marginal heading "Inverted images and ideas" appears beside Mrs. Eddy's explanation in Science and Health: "Delusion, sin, disease, and death arise from the false testimony of material sense, which, from a supposed standpoint outside the focal distance of infinite Spirit, presents an inverted image of Mind and substance with everything turned upside down." Science and Health, p. 301;

When we begin to understand that there is no outside to infinite Spirit — where could this outside be, since God, Spirit, fills all space as the result of His ever-presence? — it becomes clear to us that nothing actually exists in an inverse relationship to the divine, spiritual universe. Mrs. Eddy points this out in the same book: "So-called mortal mind — being non-existent and consequently not within the range of immortal existence — could not by simulating deific power invert the divine creation, and afterwards recreate persons or things upon its own plane, since nothing exists beyond the range of all-inclusive infinity, in which and of which God is the sole creator." ibid., pp. 513-514;

With an increasing understanding of Christian Science, we find we can to a great extent stop believing in delusive inversion and an outside to infinity. We begin to identify ourselves as being in the realm of "all-inclusive infinity." How does this all-inclusive range of divine creation become manifest? By understanding God's nature and accepting ourselves as actually His likeness, His perfect reflection.
