Teacher and student...

From the February 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

... a very special relationship. The origin of this relationship lies in our Leader's revelation; its development grows out of an increasing desire by both Christian Science teacher and student to understand and obey God. In fact, this relationship, beginning within the context of class instruction, will be enriched and placed on the most enduring basis as these two individuals aspire to see more clearly how God's parenthood fosters man's brotherhood.

Under the guidance of the Bible's promise "And they shall be all taught of God"John 6:45. both teacher and student are learners. They are learning more of the revelation that God gave to Mary Baker Eddy. They are striving to discern more of God's universal perfection. Class instruction rests squarely on Mrs. Eddy's chapter "Recapitulation" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Its questions and answers reveal reality and expose the nothingness of evil. They provide accurately and inspiringly the fundamental teachings of Christian Science. While the Bible and all of Mrs. Eddy's writings are used to explore in depth the implications of "Recapitulation," the basic concepts of this chapter furnish the framework and thrust for class.

The teacher is obligated to convey, and the student to grasp, clearer insights into the nature of God, His allness, His supremacy and immortality. The class should grow in its understanding of man as the reflection of God. It should discern a deeper appreciation of the Christ and its healing, regenerating, saving power. And from this recognition of reality evolves the capacity to detect and master not only the obvious but also the subtle aggressions of mortal mind. The fallacy, the impotence, of animal magnetism and mental malpractice is perceived by the student; he learns to prove their unreality. Teacher and student, in so broadening their view of God's allness and evil's nothingness, substantially ripen their ability to heal, to provide effective, thorough Christian Science treatment.
