"Blessed are they that have not seen"

From the August 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When the report of Jesus' resurrection was circulated, his followers responded in a variety of ways. Peter and John ran to the tomb; Mary stood and wept; and Thomas wouldn't believe the report until Jesus had appeared to him in person and shown him his hands and his side. The Master's admonition to Thomas was, "Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."John 20:29.

What convinces us of the presence of the Christ? Something far beyond physical sense testimony. Of course, we do rejoice in healing and the release from suffering. But today, as in Jesus' time, many are healed who do not then become followers of Christ. They don't realize the full import of the event.

A spiritual awakening is needed to recognize the divine presence. Of the ten lepers healed by Jesus, only one really perceived the power of the Christ. The Bible explains this in First Corinthians: "As it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God."I Cor. 2:9, 10.
