Trample on incipient evils

From the September 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Science of Truth gives us dominion over all error—the ability to trample underfoot the vicious lies of materiality: sin, disease, and death. As the ninety-first Psalm assures those who trust in the Almighty, "Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet."Ps. 91:13.

The term "young lion" in Psalm 91 may be simply poetic repetition, so often used by the Hebrews. We might, however, regard these young lions as incipient suggestions of sin or sickness, which must be trodden down to prevent their increasing in vehemence. Error ignored grows worse, but opposed promptly by the truth of being, evil can be overcome at the outset. Mrs. Eddy admonishes us, "Be no more willing to suffer the illusion that you are sick or that some disease is developing in the system, than you are to yield to a sinful temptation on the ground that sin has its necessities."Science and Health, p. 381.

When sweeping a floor, one does not brush the dust under a rug; otherwise it accumulates. The dust must be completely disposed of, and so must suggestions of sin, fear, discontent, pain, and malfunction. If merely brushed aside, they grow. Many of the challenges of old age are nothing more than the accumulation of false beliefs and latent fears not previously eliminated.
