Not guilty!

From the October 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When we experience a sore trial or testing time we can confidently put our case in God's hands. We can meet the challenge with the assurance that God's law is always in operation, and that discord cannot prevail when Truth is understood. In Isaiah we read, "The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us." Isa. 33:22.

According to criminal law procedures in the United States and some other countries, a person is adjudged innocent unless proved guilty. Similarly, in spiritual healing and problem solving we understand the established fact of our innocency and freedom by turning to the Bible. In the first chapter of Genesis, we learn of the perfect and only creation. God created all and called it good. So spiritual man, made in the likeness of God, is innocent of any evil and free from any disease or discord. This is what Christian Science helps us to prove. Healing occurs in proportion to our understanding of God's allness and the consequent nothingness of evil.

Evil and discord are unreal because God did not make them. Belief in them is the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, mentioned in the allegory in the second chapter of Genesis. The serpent, evil, persuaded mortals that eating the fruit of this tree was necessary for all who wished to be "as gods, knowing good and evil." Gen. 3:5. But this was—and is— a lie. God knows and is only good, and man is His likeness. Christian Science helps us distinguish between the real man, created by God, and mortal man, formed from the dust of the ground. It helps us identify with the former and thereby gain our dominion over belief in the latter.
