Following our Leader

From the June 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Because Mrs. Eddy put on record the Science of Christ, the eternal laws of God that Jesus taught and practiced, she commands a unique respect and affection among those whose lives have been helped and healed by Christian Science. They acknowledge, appreciate, and suitably credit her conspicuous achievements. As a dedicated follower of the Way-shower, Christ Jesus, Mrs. Eddy shared with humanity the Science of Truth, Life, and Love—making universally possible the demonstration of the divine idea of God, the Christ or true manhood so fully exemplified by Jesus.

Does Mrs. Eddy's mission imply a mission for us as well? Doesn't her book Science and Health need receptive readers to apply what they learn from it in order that its purpose may be fulfilled? Isn't the Science she discovered proved valid in each Christian Science healing? Doesn't the foundation laid by the Founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist, imply the need for ongoing spiritual building? Surely our Leader's mission extends to include a faithful following.

Through Truth's power the revelation of divine Science came to Mrs. Eddy, and she made it known to mankind. It is our work to apply the teachings of the books written by Mrs. Eddy out of her deep spiritual experience in response to God's impulsion. It is our work to demonstrate the Science she discovered. It is our work to build our individual missions and our churches on the spiritual foundation she set forth in the divinely impelled Manual of The Mother Church.
