Evil is no-where and no thing

From the September 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Millennia ago God, in all His commanding majesty and might, revealed Himself to Moses as I am that I am—a living Being of undisputed omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. The question of whether this almighty Being could in any way fragment Himself and become the fount of warring, opposite factions, is clearly answered in Deuteronomy, where we read, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord."Deut. 6:4.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy likewise defines God as "the great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal"; and she further declares Him to be "Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."Science and Health, p. 587. Nowhere in her writings does she divide God into gods, Spirit into spirits, Soul into souls, or Mind into minds. On the contrary she writes, "God is one God, infinite and perfect, and cannot become finite and imperfect."Ibid.

Many human beings are ready to accept the concept of God as All-in-all. Others pause to ask, Where does evil come from, then, and what is it? The probing questions have always been: How could one source, one perfect creator, knowingly amalgamate good and evil? How could a good God possibly be the instigator of something so contrary to His nature as evil and still remain wholly good? Conversely, how could an evil entity possess any quality out of which to create good?
