The joy of Sunday School teaching

From the November 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If you have been appointed to serve on the Sunday School staff of a Church of Christ, Scientist, look forward to it with great joy. When we respond to God's direction, we can rest assured that He supports our work.

I often recall that shortly after I received Primary class instruction in Christian Science, my church asked me to become a teacher in its Sunday School. I accepted the position with gladness. But my joy was short-lived when I discovered that my class of two and three-year-olds were not going to sit perfectly still for one hour, while I as their teacher imparted what I had just learned about Christian Science. (It was an important lesson in humility.) In fact, their interest quickly turned to each other, and the antics began!

It became more and more difficult to maintain a sense of order and attentiveness, and it was necessary for the superintendent to gently take one of the little pupils aside for a few moments. She spoke a few truths to the child, lovingly and firmly assuring her of her goodness. She told the child that she had the ability to sit, listen, and learn, and that God would help her.
